There are times when you toil hard & survive for the longest time but just when all things are falling into place, there is a jerk and it's all over. In test cricket, this scenario happens a lot to the players. They keep doing everything right but fall just before they reach a milestone.

Angelo Mathews is one of the stalwarts of Sri Lankan cricket and has been around for a long time. Even though he has had his fair share of injuries, Mathews is still hanging around and keeping them afloat with his impactful performances.

Against Bangladesh, in the first test match, Mathews walked in to bat in the 22nd over after Sri Lanka had lost the second wicket. Mathews showed his class and added 92 runs with Kusal Mendis for the third wicket. Then he added another 136 runs with Dinesh Chandimal for the fifth wicket.

When Sri Lanka lost three wickets in quick succession, Mathews added 47 runs with Vishwa Fernando for the ninth wicket. Mathews kept one end tight as Sri Lanka lost wickets and reached 199.

It was time for him to get what he deserved - a double century, a classic 200 that didn't come easy. Mathews was playing with Asitha Fernando for the final last wicket. The plan was simple: Mathews plays out the entire over and tries to get a single on the last ball.

Mathews was trying to do the exact thing and came down the track to steal a quick single but Nayeem Hasan dropped the ball a bit short and the Sri Lankan batter couldn't keep the ball to the ground. The ball went straight to the fielder at square and Mathews had his heartbreak as he missed out on a double ton by just one run.

After coming in to bat in the first session of day 1 and getting out in the last session of day 2, Mathews made 199 runs in 397 balls with the help of 19 fours and a six. Sri Lanka's total score - 397/10.
