BBL: Sydney Sixers Defeat Hobart Hurricanes By 14 Runs Despite Handscomb's 47
In the 4th match of the Big Bash League, Sydney Sixers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 14 runs. HH started off slow with just 38 runs off the first 50 balls and at the end, the run rate was just too low to chase 145.
For Sydney Sixers, Tom Curran was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Hayden Kerr picked up 2 wickets while Chris Jordan, Ben Manenti & Steve OKeefe picked up 1. Daniel Christian was the only bowler who went wicketless.
Hobart Hurricanes batters collectively contributed with scores of the 20s and Peter Handscomb smacked 47 runs off 31 balls with 3 fours & 2 sixes and stitched a partnership of 29 runs off 16 balls with Caleb Jewell (20) for the 3rd wicket and 40 runs off 23 balls with Jordan Cox (10). However, opener D Arcy Short scored 21 runs off 36 balls, playing 6 overs at a strike rate of 58.33.
In the first innings, Hurricanes skipper Moises Henriques smashed 73 runs and helped his team to post 144/9 in 20 overs after almost all the other batters failed. Hobart Hurricanes were struggling towards a decent score after losing the first 4 wickets inside the powerplay. But Henriques held one end and dealt with the bowlers wisely. He also stitched a partnership of 62 runs off 47 balls with Tom Curran (27 runs off 21 balls) and helped the team to a defendable total.
For Sydney Sixers, 27-year-old fast-medium pacer Thomas Rogers was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Nathan Ellis picked up 2 important wickets as well - opener Josh Phillipe & top scorer Moises Henriques. Joel Paris, Tim David and Sandeep Lamichhane picked up 1 wicket each.
