Kolhapur (Maharashtra), Dec 15 (CRICKETNMORE) - The Kolhapur police detained and let off Madhukar B. Rahane, father of Indian cricket star Ajinkya Rahane, for speeding and rash driving which resulted in the death of an elderly woman here on Friday, an official said.

The incident occurred when Rahane, his wife and other family members were travelling to the tourist beach resort of Tarkarli in Sindhudurg district via the Pune-Bengaluru NH4, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector of Kagal Police Station, Sunil Mhalge said.

"Rahane was speeding along the road when the woman suddenly came in the middle of the road. At that high speed, he could not apply the brakes on time and the vehicle rammed into her, around 11.30 am today," Mhalge told IANS.

He confirmed that Rahane, who at the wheel of a Hyundai i20, was "not intoxicated" and he also helped local villagers to rush the victim to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

"It was purely an accident due to speeding and negligence, after which he was arrested. The victim has been identified as one local, 67-year-old Asha Kamble," Mhalge said.

Rahane has been questioned and later booked by the Kagal police under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act pertaining to death by negligence, and endangering the life of others.

He has also been served a notice for remaining present at the police station whenever required for further investigations, he added.
