England women's cricket team skipper Heather Knight is an injury doubt on the eve of the Commonwealth Games with reports suggesting the 31-year-old had been given an injection in the hip joint "amid some irritation".

England are favourites for the gold medal along with Australia, especially after making a clean sweep of the T20I series against South Africa on Monday. England are clubbed with New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka in Group B, while Australia, India, Pakistan and Barbados make up Group A.

Heather Knight is a key member of the home team, placed second to Australia in the women's T20 world rankings, the format in use at the Commonwealth Games.

The injury kept Knight out of the last two T20I against South Africa as the hosts ended the multi-format series unbeaten.

A report in cricket.com.au said an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) spokesperson confirmed Knight will "continue to be assessed and treated" ahead of their first Games fixture against Sri Lanka on July 30 at Edgbaston.
