IND v WI: India Wins Historic ODI By 6 Wickets
IND v WI: India came on the right side of the result in the historical 1000th ODI match as they defeated West Indies by 6 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.
India began the 177-run chase in a dominant fashion as Rohit Sharma played aggressively for 51-ball 60 that came with the help of 10 fours and a six. India reached 84 runs in 13 overs before Alzarri Joseph trapped the Indian captain front.
Virat Kohli played an unusual knock of eight runs in four balls during which he scored two boundaries (first from an edge) on the first two balls. On the fourth ball, Kohli tried to hook the ball and got caught at the boundary.
Soon Ishan Kishan, who was playing cautiously for his 28 runs, tried to hit one but got caught, and in the next over, Rishabh Pant found himself unlucky to get run out as India suddenly lost four wickets with 60 runs still needed.
Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Deepak Hooda took on the challenge and made sure India didn't have any more hiccups. The duo added 62 runs in the next 63 balls to finish the run-chase.
Earlier, India's new ODI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first. India began brilliantly as Mohammad Siraj bowled Shai Hope in the third over of the game. Indian bowlers were right on the money throughout the powerplay as West Indies could only manage 39 runs in the first ten overs.
Playing his first ODI after 2017, Washington Sundar got his first wickets of the match in the 11th over as he got Brandon King caught at mid-wicket. In the same over, Sundar trapped Darren Bravo in front as well.
Yuzvendra Chahal was introduced in the 20th over and he instantly made an impact as he got Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard in consecutive deliveries in his first over itself. Pooran was also Chahal's 100th ODI wicket.
In the next over, Chahal got Shamarh Brooks out and in the following over, Akeal Hosein was also dismissed by Prasidh Krishna as West Indies got reduced to 79/7.
Jason Holder and Fabian Allen joined forces to rebuild the West Indian innings and tried to take the team to a respectable total. The duo added 78 off 91 balls as West Indies went past the 150-run mark.
Allen was dismissed after scoring 29 from 43 balls as Washington Sundar struck again to break the partnership. Prasidh Krishna removed Jason Holder, who scored 57 off 71 balls with the help of four sixes.
Yuzvendra Chahal put the final nail in the coffin as West Indies got bowled out for 176 in 43.5 overs. Chahal ended with 4/49 in his 9.5 overs, Sundar got 3/30, Prasidh took 2/29 in his 10 overs while Siraj got one wicket.
