Jasprit Bumrah's maiden fifer went in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders defended a 166-run target against Mumbai Indians to stay alive in the IPL 2022 playoff race. With this win, KKR have registered their fifth win of the season and are tied to 10 points with three other franchises.

Chasing a target of 166, MI never really got going as they lost captain Rohit Sharma in the first over itself. Ishan Kishan scored 51 off 43 balls to keep MI in check but didn't find any batter to support him.

The best partnership for MI was between Ishan and Ramandeep Singh, which was 37 runs for the third wicket. After Ishan's 51, the next best score for Mumbai was 15 off 16 balls from Kieron Pollard.

For KKR, Pat Cummins picked up three wickets (all in one over), Andre Russell got two while Tim Southee and Varun Chakaravarthy took a wicket each. MI lost three wickets via runout including that of Kieron Pollard as they got bundled out for 113 runs in 17.3 overs.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah's maiden five-wicket haul helped Mumbai Indians restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to 165/9.

On being asked to bat first, Venkatesh Iyer provided a solid start, scoring 43 runs upfront to get KKR to score 64 runs in the powerplay. After Iyer, Nitish Rana smashed 46 off 26 balls.

However, the duo's hard work couldn't maximize Kolkata's score as Jasprit Bumrah bounced out the KKR batting lineup to pick a five-wicket haul, which also included a triple-wicket maiden.

Kolkata could only reach 165/9 at the end despite being 123/2 in 13 overs at one stage.

Brief Scorecard:

Kolkata Knight Riders - 165/9 (Nitish Rana - 46; Jasprit Bumrah - 5/10)
