Mitchell Marsh Fined For Showing Dissent To Umpire During BBL Knockout
Perth Scorchers all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been fined for showing dissent to umpire Sam Nogajski during the Big Bash League(BBL) Knockout match against Sydney Sixers on Sunday.
Marsh reacted angrily after he was given out caught behind on Steven O'Keefe's delivery. Both bowler and the keeper Josh Philippe appealed with confidence. Umpire took his time but eventually raised the finger, after which the all-rounder couldn't keep his calm.
Cricket Australia, after a hearing on Saturday night, found Mitchell Marsh guilty of a Level 2 breach of CA's Code of Conduct, which can lead to a suspension and/or a maximum penalty of $10,000. However, since the all-rounder has had no Code of Conduct breaches in the past two years, he was instead fined $5,000.
“I accept the fine handed down to me, my reaction to the umpire’s decision was unacceptable and not the example I want to be setting for any young cricketer,” Marsh said, accepting the decision.
“I have complete respect for the umpires and the job they do. I’ll learn from this and look forward to Thursday night’s match.”
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feared Marsh could get suspended and miss the next BBL game.
"You name another time in the game where you've seen a reaction like that for as prolonged as that was from a batsman. I'm not hoping he does (get suspended) but I reckon he will," Ponting said.
"He will have to pay in some way, shape, or form for his reaction to that dismissal. Let's hope it is not a bad outcome. It will be bad in one way or the other, but his reaction was over the top and not expected from a senior Australian player," he further added.
Mitchell Marsh will be available to play in the next Perth Scorchers match on Thursday against the winner of Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat, which is scheduled on 31st January.
