Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in a nervy run chase in match 59 of the IPL 2022 played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Mumbai's victory also meant that Chennai got knocked out of the race to the playoffs.

Chasing a modest total of 98, MI lost Ishan Kishan in the first over. Rohit Sharma looked good during his 18 off 14 balls but couldn't continue as he too got out in the fourth over. Daniel Sams, who was promoted to bat at number three, got out in the fifth over after scoring just one run and in the same over, debutant Tristan Stubbs got out as well for a duck.

With the score reading 33/4 in five overs, Tilak Verma and Hrithik Shokeen added 48 runs in 47 balls to halt the collapse. Shokeen scored 18 in 23 balls before he got out in the 13th over trying to smack a six.

Tim David didn't take much time and finished the game with his 16 off seven balls including two sixes. Tilak Verma remained unbeaten on 34 from 32 balls that included four fours.

Mukesh Choudhary picked three wickets in his four overs while Simarjeet Singh and Moeen Ali got one wicket each.

Earlier, on being asked to bat first, CSK had a horror start as they got reduced to 39/6 in 7.3 overs. CSK were 5/3 in 1.4 overs after losing Devon Conway and Moeen Ali in the first over and Robin Uthappa in the next.

Ruturaj Gaikwad got out in the fifth over after scoring just seven, Ambati Rayudu was dismissed in the next over, and Shivam Dube in the eighth over of the innings.

MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo added 39 runs in 29 balls for the seventh wicket. Bravo scored 12 off 15 balls before departing in the 13th over. In the same over, Simarjeet Singh also got out. Four balls later, Maheesh Theekshana was sent back to the pavilion.

Dhoni and Mukesh Choudhary added 16 runs for the final wicket. While Dhoni looked to farm the strike and in the attempt to get back to the strikers' end for the next over, a risk single meant Mukesh got run out. CSK got bundled out for 97 and Dhoni remained not out on 36 off 33 balls.

For MI, Daniel Sams picked up three wickets; Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya got two; and Jasprit Bumrah and Ramandeep Singh got one wicket each.
