WPL 2023 Final: Nat Sciver Takes Mumbai Indians To Inaugural WPL Title With A Thrilling 7 Wicket Win Against Delhi Capitals
WPL 2023 Final: Nat Sciver Brunt stepped up with the bat yet again as Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 7 wickets in a low scoring thriller, winning the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League.
Chasing 132 runs to win the title, Mumbai Indians lost Yastika Bhatia (4) and Hayley Matthews (13) inside the powerplay. Delhi Capitals spotted a comeback window, but then MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and all-rounder Nat Sciver Brunt firmly held the crease to stabilize the team in a tight run chase.
Harmanpreet and Nat added 72 runs off 74 balls for the 2nd wicket, before the skipper was dismissed by a run out in the 17th over. Harmanpreet scored 37 runs off 39 balls. However, Nat Sciver kept going sturdly at the other end, and adding runs at a slow yet necessary pace. With 21 runs required off the final two overs, Nat Sciver started the 19th over with a boundary against Jess Jonassen.
Amelia Kerr struck two more boundaries in the same over while Nat Sciver-Brunt scored another four as Mumbai Indians chased down the target with 3 balls remaining. Nat Sciver remained unbeaten on 60 runs off 55 balls with 7 boundaries. For Delhi Capitals, Radha Yadav and Jess Jonassen managed 1 wicket each.
In the first innings, Issy Wong and Hayley Matthews bowled brilliantly as Mumbai Indians restricted Delhi Capitals to 131/9 in 20 overs in the final of Women's Premier League 2023. For Delhi Capitals, captain Meg Lanning was the top scorer with 35 runs off 29 balls.
Shafali Verma was dismissed in the 2nd over after scoring just 11 runs off 4 balls, while Alice Capsey was dismissed for a duck in the same over by Issy Wong. Jemimah Rodrigues (9) was also dismissed inside the powerlay as Issy Wong rigged Delhi Capitals down to 35/3 in 4.2 overs.
Marizanne Kapp (18) and Meg Lanning held the crease for a while but Amelia Kerr broke through with Kapp's wicket, while Lanning was dismissed in the next overs by a run out. Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav held the mantle down the order, scoring an unbeaten 27 runs each in 17 and 12 balls respectively. For Delhi Capitals, Issy Wong and Hayley Matthews picked up 3 wickets each while Amelia Kerr managed 1 wicket.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning won the toss & opted to bat first against Mumbai Indians in the final match of Women's Premier League 2023. This match was played at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
