New Zealand Thrash Bangladesh By 71 Runs To Stay Alive Women's T20 World Cup 2023
NZW vs BANW: After a thunderous display of batting, the White Ferns bowlers stepped up as well as New Zealand halted Bangladesh to 118/8, winning their first match in the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. New Zealand have lost 2 matches prior to this and needed the win to stay alive in the tournament.
Chasing 190 runs to win, Bangladesh never looked in the game against attacking White Ferns bowlers. Hannah Rowe struck with the first two wickets as opener Shamima Sultana (14) and Sibhana Mostary (4) were dismissed inside the powerplay.
Captain Nigar Sultan also failed to score big as she managed just 8 runs before Amelia Kerr cleaned her up. Apart from openers, only Shorna Akter managed to breach the double-digit mark, scoring 31 runs off 22 balls. For New Zealand, Eden Carson grabbed three wickets while Hannah Rowe managed 2 wickets. Lea Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr also picked up 1 wicket to take their team to a 71-run win.
In the first innings, courtesy of an excellent batting display by the New Zealand batters, the Kiwis posted 189/3 in 20 overs in the 12th match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. Suzie Bates remained unbeaten after thrashing Bangladesh at a strike rate of 132.79 in 61 balls.
Opening the innings, New Zealand were off to an explosive start as Bernadine Bezuidenhout and Suzie Bates added 77 runs for the first wicket in just 8.4 overs. Bernadine was dismissed after scoring 44 runs in just 26 balls with 5 fours.
While Amelia Kerr (16) and Sophie Devine (0) were dismissed early, Maddy Green came out with all guns blazing, remaining unbeaten on 44 runs in 20 balls with 7 fours. Maddy and Bates etched an unbroken partnership of 82 runs in just 42 balls for the 4th wicket, taking New Zealand to 189/3 in a virtual eliminator Group stage match.
For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun picked up 2 wickets while Shorna Akter managed 1 wicket.
Earlier, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss & opted to bat first against Bangladesh in the 12th match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. This match is being played at Newlands, Cape Town.
