Richa, Harmanpreet Steer India To 6-Wicket Win Against West Indies In Women's T20 World Cup 2023
INDW vs WIW: Courtesy of a match-saving partnership between captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh, India defeated West Indies by 7 wickets in the 9th Women's T20 World match Cup 2023. India have now won 2 out of 2 games in the tournament.
Chasing 118 runs to win, India were off to a disappointing start after a 32-run opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. India lost 3 quick wickets in the form of famed batters Smriti, Shafali and Jemimah Rodrigues and were reduced to 43/3 in 7.1 overs.
But skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and 19-year-old Richa Ghosh held the crease as the duo added 72 runs for the 4th wicket, taking team India to victory with 11 deliveries remaining. Richa Ghosh scored 44 runs off 32 balls with 5 fours while Harmanpreet Kaur contributed with 33 runs before getting dismissed as India were just 4 runs shy of the target.
For West Indies, Karishma Ramharack grabbed 2 wickets while Chinelle Henry and Hayley Matthews managed 1 wicket each. In the first innings,
Deepti Sharma once again stepped up against West Indies as Indian women restricted the opposition to 118/6 in 20 overs in the 9th match of Women's T20 World Cup 2023.
Pooja Vastrakar was surprisingly handed the 2nd over of the innings given her record against West Indies opener and skipper Hayley Matthews. Vastrakar dismissed her on the 2nd delivery as West Indies lost their first wicket for just 4 runs.
From thereon, Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle held the crease as the duo added 73 runs for the 2nd wicket. But once Deepti Sharma broke through with Campbelles's (30) wicket, Stafanie Taylor (42) was also dismissed in the same over. Deepti brought India back with a couple of wickets.
From thereon, only Cheadean Nation managed to stay at the crease as she scored an unbeaten 21 runs in 18 balls. Deepti Sharma ended up with 3 wickets while Renuka Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar managed 1 wicket each.
Earlier, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews won the toss & opted to bat first against India in the 9th match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. This match is being played at Newlands, Cape Town.
