1996 World Cup Trivia and Facts

The 1996 Cricket World Cup was the sixth edition of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Cricket World Cup. It was held from 14th February to 17th March June 1996. It was jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. 

Teams - 12 Teams participated in the tournament which are categorized in two groups of 6 teams each. Group A - Sri Lanka, Australia, India, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Kenya. Group B - South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, England, United Arab Emiates, NetherlandsThe top four teams from each group then played the knock-out rounds of quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

1996 Wills World Cup

  • The world cup was officially known as Wills World Cup as the tournament was sponsored by Wills. 
  • Sachin Tendulkar (India) was the highest scorer of the 1996 cricket world cup. He scored 523 runs in the tournament.
  • Anil Kumble (India) was the highest wicket of the 1996 cricket world cup. He took 15 wickets at an average of 18.73 in the tournament.
  • Gary Kirsten (S.Africa) scored the highest individual score of the world cup. He scored 188* from 159 balls against U.A.E.
  • Paul Strang (Zimbabwe) produced the best bowling figures of 5/21 against Kenya.
  • Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) won the Man of the Tournament Award for his allround performance. He scored 221 runs and 7 wickets.
  • Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka) won the man of the match award in both semi-final (against India) and final (against Australia)
  • Mark Waugh (Australia) scored 3 centuries in the tournament
  • K Arthurton (West Indies) was out without scoring runs in the 5 innings played in the world cup.
  • Ian Healey (Australia) did 12 dismissals as a wicket-keeper.
  • Anil Kumble (India) picked highest number of catches (8) as a fielder
  • Highest team score in the tournament was made by Sri Lanka against Kenya. SL scored 398/5 in 50 overs
