2011 World Cup Trivia and Facts

The 2011 Cricket World Cup was the tenth edition of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Cricket World Cup. It was held from 19th February to 2nd April 2011. It was jointly hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. 

Teams - 14 Teams participated in the tournament which are categorized in two groups of 7 teams each. Group A - Sri Lanka, Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Kenya. Canada. Group B - India, South Africa, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Irelands, Netherlands. The top four teams from each group then played the knock-out rounds of quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

ICC 2011 World Cup

  • Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) was the highest scorer of the 2011 cricket world cup. He scored 500 runs in 9 matches of the tournament at an average of 62.50
  • Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) and Zaheer Khan (India) were the highest wicket takers of the 2011 cricket world cup. Both took 21 wickets. Shahid Afridi took in 8 matches  at an average of 12.5 and Zaheer Khan took 9 matches at an average of 16.66.
  • Virender Sehwag (India) scored the highest individual score of the world cup. He scored 175 from 140 balls against Bangladesh.
  • Kemar Roach (West Indies) produced the best bowling figures of 6/27 against Netherlands.
  • Yuvraj Singh (India) won the Man of the Tournament Award for his allround performance. He scored 362 runs and 15 wickets..
  • Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) did 14 dismissals as a wicket-keeper.
  • Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) picked highest number of catches (8) as a fielder.
  • Highest team score in the tournament was made by India against Bangladesh. SL scored 370/4 in 50 overs.
  • In the final between India and Sri Lanka, loud crowd noise prevented match referee Jeff Crowe from hearing Sri Lankan captain Sangakkara's call as the coin was tossed by Indian captain Dhoni. The toss had to be redone.
