WATCH: Nathan Lyon Finally Gets His 400th Test Wicket; 3rd Australian Bowler Ever To Join The Club
In the concluded first Ashes test match at the Gabba, after Joe Root & Dawid Malan's marathon partnership on Day 3, Australian bowlers came with a new spirit on Day 4. Nathan Lyon dismissed Dawid Malan and then the rest of the batting lineup added just 74 runs.
Nathan Lyon provided the crucial breakthrough as he dismissed Dawid Malan for 82, breaking his partnership of 162 runs with English captain Joe Root. However, this wicket was even more special and personal for Nathan Lyon, as it marked his 400th test wicket.
Lyon had taken his 399th wicket on 15th January 2021, against India at the historic Gabba test, where he dismissed Rohit Sharma for 2 runs. He went wicketless in the next inning and since then Australia didn't play a test match. Lyon waited for 362 days to finally grab his 400th test scalp and became only the third Australian bowler to pick up 400 test wickets - after Shane Warne (708) & Glenn McGrath (563).
Arguably the greatest Aussie off-spinner, Nathan Lyon went on to pick 3 more English wickets and now has 403 wickets to his name in 101 matches. After the match, Lyon revealed in an interview with Adam Gilchrist that even though he doesn't remember what he had for breakfast, he will forever cherish the moment he picked up his 400th.
