WATCH: Umpire's Bizarre LBW Decision Baffles The Batter In County Cricket
Umpiring is a tough job. It requires expert eyes and every decision is made out of interpretation after years of experience and training. However, cricket is a game of instinct and an umpire's decision can turn the game around.
Because of the nature of such an intense game, every player wants the decision to go in his/her favor and when it doesn't, they react in a disappointed fashion. But umpires aren't playing for any team and they make decisions according to how they have learned and trained.
In the ongoing County season in England, Kent was playing against Hampshire at St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury. On the last day of the match, Kent was trying to save the game. Jordon Cox was looking solid with a score of 64 in 182 balls while having a partnership with Darren Stevens at the other end.
On the last ball of the 80th over, Felix Organ bowled a delivery that was way outside off-stump. Cox decided to leave the ball and play the ball through his front foot. The ball spun and struck his pad.
The bowler and the wicketkeeper appealed for an LBW and the umpire had no issue but to raise the finger. Jordon Cox was stunned by the decision as he was batting way outside off stump.
The possible umpire's interpretation was that Cox didn't play a shot so the impact of the ball didn't count as per the LBW law. The umpire only had to decide whether the ball would have crashed onto the stumps and he interpreted that it would.
Although from the naked eye, it does seem that it was a bizarre decision and how would a ball hit the stumps from that angle. However, it wasn't the first time the ball had spun so much in that game. Interestingly, it was Jordan Cox only who had faced a very sharply turning delivery earlier in the inning.

The umpire used his experienced and read the conditions were assisting sharp turn and that would have been the possible explanation of the decision that baffled the batter.
