After the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain, Afghanistan confirmed their place in the ODI World Cup to be held in 2023 in India.

After the match was abandoned due to rain, Afghanistan attained 5 points in the Cricket World Cup Super League to take their total tally to 115 points. Courtesy of this, Afghanistan are currently placed seventh on the points table, where the top eight sides would automatically qualify for the World Cup to be held next year.

On one hand, where the 'No Result' worked to Afghanistan's advantage, it did the exact opposite for their opponent Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's automatic qualification chances are now in a balance where they'd need a number of games to go in their favour.

Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lankan side is currently in the 10th place in the points table with 67 points, and only have four matches remaining in this CWCSL cycle. They can start their effort to qualify with a win against Afghanistan in Pallekele on November 30th (Wednesday).

Before the rain ended the 2nd ODI for good, Sri Lankan spinners did exceptionally well to bowl out Afghanistan for just 228. Early on in the innings, Hazratullah Zazai (68) and Rahmat Shah (58) scored centuries to give a good start to Afghanistan, but Wanindu Hasaranga and Dhananjaya de Silva slowed down the run rate considerably as the Afghan team was bowled out with 1.4 overs remaining.

In the Cricket World Cup Super League, India have automatic qualification being hosts. Regardless, they are sitting at the top spot with 13 wins in 20 matches. Defending champions England are placed second with 12 wins in 18 matches, while New Zealand have moved up to the 3rd spot with their win against India in the 1st ODI and an abandoned match in the 2nd game.

Four-time World Champions Australia are sitting 4th, and are above Bangladesh and Pakistan on net run rate (NRR) with all three teams having 6 wins in 12 games. With Afghanistan on 7th, West Indies are placed 8th with 9 wins in 24 matches. In the last 5 spots, Sri Lanka and South Africa are surprising names. Sri Lanka have won only 6 games in the 20 matches they've played while South Africa are reeling at the 11th spot with 5 wins in 16 matches.
