WTC Finals: Team India made a dominating start to the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, defeating Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the 1st Test. Moreover, team India bowled out Australia for their 2nd lowest Test total against India and finished the first Test within 3 days.

After opting to bat first, Australia were bowled out for 177 runs in the first innings. Ravindra Jadeja picked up 5-fer on his Test return while Ashwin grabbed three wickets to bowl out in a little more than two sessions. Marnus Labuschagne was the top scorer for Australians with 49 runs.

In reply, captain Rohit Sharma smacked his 9th Test ton. Ravindra Jadeja scored 70 runs on his comeback while Axar Patel scored 84 runs, batting at #9. Mohammed Shami also contributed with 37 runs. For Australia, debutant Todd Murphy picked up 7 wickets. When Australia came out to bat again, Ashwin struck with 5 wickets as the visitors were bowled out for just 91 runs.

With this win, India are well on the path to confirming their spot in the WTC finals. With their 9th win in the ongoing WTC cycle, India's Win PCT has climbed to 61.67. If the hosts manage to win 2 more Tests in this series, they will move to the top spot and qualify for the WTC finals without being dependent on any other teams' results.

Australia, on the other hand, lost just their 2nd Test in this WTC cycle, and are still on the top of the WTC Points Table with 10 wins and a PCT of 70.83. Sri Lanka are in the 3rd spot with a PCT of 53.33 and South Africa are placed 4th with a PCT of 48.72. These two teams would be hoping for a miracle to happen to take them to the WTC finals.
