April 5 (CRICKETNMORE) - Mumbai Indians defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by 1 run in the final of Indian Premier League at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. In ten seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 2017 final between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant was arguably the most thrilling.

Match Summary

Mumbai Indians - 129/8 in 20 Overs

Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. At one point Mumbai team was struggling for 81/7 in 15 overs but Krunal Pandya then played a valuable knock of 47 runs from 38 deliveries and helped his team to post 128/8 in 20 Overs. Jaydev Unadkat, Adam Zampa and Daniel Christian took 2 wickets each for Pune.

Rising Pune Supergiant - 128/6 in 20 Overs

Chasing a small target, Pune responded positively reaching 97/2 from 16 overs requiring 33 runs of 24 balls. But Mumbai bowlers strike back and dismissed MS Dhoni at a crucial point.

 

With 11 runs to get in the final over to be bowled by Johnson, the target was still looking quite achievable with well set Steve Smith (51) at the crease. Manoj Tiwary struck a four off the first ball making it more simpler for the team, 7 requiring on 5 balls. However, Tiwary and Smith were dismissed in the next two deliveries.

On the final ball of the innings, Pune needed 4 runs. Daniel Christian strikes well but failed to clear the boundary and his partner Washington Sundar was run out while attempting a third run, resulting in a one-run victory for Mumbai. Johnson took 3 wickets for Mumbai.

Mumbai's total of 129 was also the lowest winning total in the first innings of an IPL final.

Krunal Pandya was awarded man of the match.
