India vs England: Statistical Preview Of Test Series, Virat Kohli Set To Create A World Record

The four-match series between India and England will begin from 5th February. The first two matches of the series will be played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the last two Tests at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Test history between the two teams has been a story to tell. India played its first Test match against England in 1932 and recorded their first win against them only. A total of 122 matches have been played so far between the two teams, in which England has won 47, India 26, while 49 games have resulted in a draw.

World Record On The Cards For Virat Kohli

If Virat Kohli hits a century against England, he will create a world record of maximum international hundreds as a captain. Kohli is currently tied with former Australian captain Ricky Ponting with 41 centuries. 

Besides, if Kohli hits a hundred, he will join Ricky Ponting at the second position in the maximum international centuries with 71 centuries. Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 100 centuries to his name. The Indian captain has so far hit 70 centuries. 

 

Clive Lloyd's Record in danger

Virat Kohli is 14 runs away from taking over the fourth position from legendary Clive Lloyd in the race of most runs as captain. Kohli has scored 5220 runs while leading the side, Lloyd totaled 5233 runs. 

Ashwin inches closer to 400 test wickets

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is 23 scalps away from taking 400 test wickets. He will become the second-fastest bowler to reach the milestone. Muttiah Muralitharan is the current fastest to take 400 test wickets - 72 matches. Ashwin has so far played 74 tests in which he has taken 377 wickets. 

Ishant Sharma To Complete His 300 Test Wickets 

Once Ishant Sharma takes three wickets against England, he will complete his 300 test wickets. Ishant will become the sixth player to achieve this feat in Tests for India after Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Ravichandran Ashwin (377), Zaheer Khan (311).

Also, if Ishant picks up 15 wickets in the series, he will leave Zaheer behind to become the highest wicket-taker for India in Test Matches. 

 

Ishant's 100 Appearances In Tests

Ishant Sharma is only three steps away from making a record of playing 100 Test matches for India. So far, only ten players have played 100 or more tests for India. Ishant will join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VSK Laxman, Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag in the list of players who have played 100 or more matches for India. 

Joe Root's 100 Test Matches

England captain Joe Root will play his 100th Test match for England once he enters Chennai for the first test match against India. Before him, 14 players have played 100 or more Tests for England.
