IPL Stats: Highest Run Chases In IPL History

IPL Stats & Records - Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will clash against IPL 2021 runners up Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match of IPL 2022 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. A total of 10 teams will clash against each other as the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League returns to India. 

The twenty20 format in cricket gained popularity due to the high scoring nature of the games. Spectators enjoy a team setting a huge target and then seeing the opposition team chase down the target even more. Over the years, we have witnessed a number of high scoring thrillers in the past 14 seasons of the IPL.

Here are the top 5 highest run chases in the history of IPL.


#5. Punjab Kings (211/4 v Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2014)

After being asked to bat first by Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a total of 205/5 in the 39th match of IPL 2014. In reply, Punjab batters produced a team effort to chase down the total with 8 balls and 6 wickets remaining. Wriddhiman Saha scored 54 runs in 26 balls, Manan Vohra scored 47 runs in 20 balls, Maxwell smacked 43 runs in 22 balls while Miller and Bailey went unbeaten on 24*(24) & 35*(19) respectively.


#4. Delhi Capitals (214/4 v Gujarat Lions, 2017)

An impeccable batting performance was witnessed from young Indian explosive batters Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant as Delhi managed to chase down a total of 209 with 15 balls remaining and 7 wickets in hand. Samson scored 61 runs in 31 balls while opening the innings and Rishabh Pant smashed 97 runs in 43 balls batting at #3. 


#3. Rajasthan Royals (217/7 v Deccan Chargers, 2008)

In the opening season of the IPL, Deccan Chargers posted a total of 214/5 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. In reply, Graeme Smith scored 71 runs off 45 balls while opening the innings, and Yusuf Pathan smacked 61 runs off just 28 balls batting at #3. Rajasthan Royals chased down the total in 19.5 overs with 3 wickets in hand. 


#2. Mumbai Indians (219/6 v Chennai Super Kings, 2021)

The previous edition of the IPL saw a high-scoring thriller between the two most successful IPL franchises - Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. CSK posted a total of 218/4 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. In reply, Mumbai Indians managed to chase down the total on the last ball. Pollard remained not out with his 87 runs off 34 balls with 6 fours and 8 sixes to win the match for MI.

In another thrilling match between Rajasthan and Punjab, Mayank Agarwal smacked a brilliant hundred as Punjab posted 223/2 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. In reply, three RR batters smacked fifties as Rajasthan managed to chase down the total in 19.3 overs. Sanju Samson smacked 85 runs in 42 balls, while skipper Steven Smith and Rahul Tewatia contributed with 50(27) and 53(31) respectively as Royals won the match by 4 wickets.
