Biography Of Arjuna Ranatunga- The Greatest Sri Lankan Captain Ever
Arjuna Ranatunga was born on December 1, 1963 at Gampaha, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in political family.
Arjuna Ranatunga is the son of Reggie, a well-known politician in Sri Lanka. Ranatunga senior was a part of Sri Lanka Freedom Party and took on numerous political responsibilities in his life.
His brothers, Dammika, Nishantha and Sanjeeva have played international cricket for Sri Lanka. Arjuna Ranatunga’s son also represented Tamil Union in few unofficial matches in 2010.
At the age of 18, Ranatunga played Sri Lanka’s inaugural Test match in Colombo. He scored 54 and thus became the first Sri Lankan to score a fifty in a Test match.
In June 2000, Ranatunga became the first cricketer to play in their country’s first and hundredth Test match.
He was the captain of Sri Lanka, when the team won 1996 World Cup. As a batsman, He scored 241 runs in the tournament ending with the highest average (120) in the World Cup
