The Test started in spectacular fashion. Nissar clean bowled Percy Holmes and Herbert Sutcliffe, while Lall Singh ran out Frank Woolley – all inside the first half an hour of cricket. England were 19/3 at this stage. They eventually reached 259, and India finished Day 1 on 30 for no loss. The match was balanced at this stage

But India lost their grip thereafter. England won by 158 runs on the third evening. Douglas Jardine, the Bombay-born England captain, scored 79 and 85.
