The orange cap in the Indian Premier League is awarded to the batsman who has accumulated the maximum number
7th March, New Delhi (CRICKETNMORE) - The orange cap in the Indian Premier League is awarded to the batsman who has accumulated the maximum number of runs during the tournament. T20 cricket is all about the humongous hits, the sixes and fours, alongside some delicate strokes and out of the book shots on display. The cap has been held by players like Shaun Marsh, Matthew Hayden, Sachin Tendulkar, Michael Hussey, Chris Gayle (twice) and Robin Uthappa in the previous editions, with Michael Hussey and Chis Gayle being the joint top-scorer in a single edition with 733 runs. Lets have a look how each of these batsman fared in each of the IPL editions:
IPL 2008

Australian batsman Shaun Marsh shot into the limelight in the inaugral IPL with his performances for the Kings XI Punjab. Coming late into the mix, the unknown Aussie left-hander showed consistent performances throughout the tournament and made a name for himself in the cricketing circuit.
IPL 2009
Mathew Hayden- 572 runs from 12 innings; Avg-52; HS- 89; 100's- 0; 50's-5
This time another Australian southpaw, Mathew Hayden displayed some outstanding performances in South Africa to walk away with the honours. His strike rate of 144.81 says it all.
IPL 2010
Sachin Tendulkar- 618 runs from 15 innings; Avg- 47.53; HS-89*; 100's- 0; 50's-5
How can the master blaster be far behind when it comes to runs. Sachin, playing for Mumbai Indians, was the reason behind the team's going to the play-offs. Though he went past 50 five times, a century eluded him. Ironically, he hit only 3 sixes in the season.
IPL 2011
Chris Gayle- 608 runs from 12 innings; Avg- 67.55; HS- 107; 100's-2; 50's- 3
Marauding West indian batsman Chris Gayle came to the fore in the 2011 edition of the IPL. What was especially staggering was his strike rate of 185.33, the highest so far by an orange cap holder.
IPL 2012
Chris Gayle- 733 runs from 14 innings; Avg- 61.08; HS- 128*; 100's-1; 50's-7
For the second consecutive time Chris Gayle won the orange cap and this time he was even more dangerous with the bat than the earlier edition striking a record 59 sixes in the edition, that equals to 49% of the total runs he scored! His strike rate was 160.74 in the tournament.
IPL 2013
Michael Hussey- 733 runs from 17 innings; Avg-52.35; HS- 95; 100's- 0; 50's-6
Mr Cricket, as he is known in Australia and worldwide, delivered consistent performances for the Chennai Super Kings as an opener but was unable to take them over the mark in the finals.
IPL 2014
Robin Uthappa- 660 runs from 16 innings; Avg- 44; HS- 83; 100's-0; 50's- 5
Despite KKR having a poor start to the tournament, their fortunes changed after Robin Uthappa was promoted as an opener and along with skipper Gautam Gambhir scripted consistent opening partnerships to lead their team to the second IPL title. He had a strike rate of 137.38.
