Ace England batter Joe Root scored a fabulous match-winning century on the 4th day of the 1st test match against New Zealand at Lord's and scripted history. The 77th over of the second innings, being bowled by Tim Southee, Root ran for a double on the third deliveri and brought up his 26th test century along with completing 10,000 test runs. The former captain faced 170 deliveries and with the help of 12 fours, scored an unbeaten 115 runs and guided England to a 5-wicket victory.

Joe Root has now become the 14th player ever to register 10,000 runs in international tests and England's second player to do so. Only former captain Alastair Cook was able to achieve this feat for England prior to this.

Youngest player to complete 10,000 test runs

Joe Root has tied for the youngest player in test cricket history to register 10,000 test runs. The batter has achieved this feat at an age of 31 years and 15 days, equalling Alastair Cook's record. Indian stalwart Sachin Tendulkar completed 10,000 runs at an age of 31 years and 226 days. 


Unique Feat

Joe Root became the first player ever to complete 10,000 test runs in under 10 years from his debut. The 31-year old played his first international test match in December, 2012 against team India. 


This is also the first time that Joe Root has smacked a century in the fourth innings of a test match. Root scored the first 50 runs carefully, taking up 107 balls as Stokes was on the other end. However, once Stokes fell, Root scored the next 50 runs in just 50 deliveries. 

While talking about the match, England started on 216/4 on day 4, when Root was unbeaten on 77. The hosts required 61 runs more to win the match.
Daryl Mitchell (108) and Tom Blundell (96) played excellent knocks to take New Zealand to 285 runs in the third innings and posted a target of 277 runs for England to win the match.

England had a bad start in their second innings, losing 4 wickets for just 69 runs. After this, Joe Root & Ben Stokes added 90 runs for the 5th wicket. Skipper Stokes was dismissed after scoring 54 runs, but Root held the other end firmly. Along with Ben Foakes, root etched an unbroken partnership of 120 runs for the 5th wicket to take their team to victory. England now leads the test series 1-0.
