Mumbai Indians started off their WPL 2023 campaign in style as they thrashed Gujarat Giants by 143 runs in the opening fixture. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur remained the top scorer as she smashed 65 runs at a strike rate of 217, laced with 14 boundaries. Opener Hayley Matthews also contributed with 47 runs off 31 balls while all-rounder Amelia Kerr remained unbeaten on 45 runs in 24 balls as MI posted a massive total of 207 runs in 20 overs.

Spinner Saika Ishaque stepped up with the ball on a typically batting surface, as she ran through the opposition's middle and lower middle order. The 27-year-old picked up 4 wickets for just 11 runs in 3.1 overs, including a maiden. Amelia Kerr also grabbed 2 wickets for 12 runs in 2 overs, including a maiden while English all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt got the openers inside the powerplay. Issy Wong also registered a wicket to her name while conceding 7 runs in 3 overs. 

Royal Challengers Bangalore on the other hand faced a hefty defeat by 60 runs in their first match of the Women's Premier League. Chasing a massive 224 runs to win, RCB openers gave a strong start as the team reached 41 runs in 4.1 overs. Sophie Devine was then dismissed after scoring 14 runs in 11 balls, while her opening partner and skipper Smriti Mandhana went on to score 35 runs in 23 balls. Ellyse Perry contributed with 31 runs while batting at #3, while Disha Kasat (9) and Richa Ghosh (2) had disappointing outings. Heather Knight however scored 34 runs off 21 balls in the end while Megan Schutt remained unbeaten n 30 runs in 19 deliveries as RCB avoided losing all their wickets. 

Heather Knight was the only RCB bowler to grab a wicket as she registered 2 scalps in her name in Bangalore's 1st WPL match. Knight picked up 2 wickets while conceding 40 runs in her 3 overs. Renuka Singh remained wicket-less after giving away 24 runs in 3 overs, while ace Australian bowler Megan Schutt conceded 45 runs in 4 overs without picking up a wicket.
