Zimbabwe were put in to bat by Sri Lanka and made the most of it. Andy Flower, on his one-day debut scored a superb unbeaten century. He was supported first by Arnott, and then Waller in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 145 - a World Cup record - in 13 overs. Waller's 83 took a mere 45 balls (three sixes, nine fours), and his 32-ball 50 was also a Cup record at that time. Chasing down a mamooth total of 313, Mahanama and Samarasekera (50 in 33 balls) gave an opening stand of 128 at almost a run a ball. While the middle order collapsed but captain Arjuna Ranatunga played a superbknock of 88*. He shared a good partnership with Sanath Jayasuriya (32 off 24 balls) and guided his team to a superb victory.
