After Sri Lanka opted to field first in the only T20I at Pallekele in 2012, Virat Kohli helped team India post 155/3 in 20 overs. Kohli scored 68 runs in 48 balls and smacked 11 boundaries and a six. In reply, Sri Lanka were restricted to 116 in 18 overs. Ashok Dinda picked up 4 wickets, Irfan Pathan bagged 3 wickets while Umesh Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin managed one scalp each, as India won the match by 39 runs.

Sri Lanka yet again decided against themselves after winning the toss in the 2nd T20I at Ranchi in 2016, as India posted 196/6 in 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan scored 51 runs off 25 balls while Rohit Sharma scored 43 runs in 36 balls to remain as the significant scorers. Indian bowlers made an easy job out of this defence as they halted Sri Lanka to 127/9 in 20 overs, and India won the match by 69 runs. For Team India, Ashwin picked up 3 wickets while Nehra, Jadeja and Bumrah picked up 2 wickets each.

Sri Lanka again asked India to bat first and paid the price. India scored 201/6 in the first innings with fifties from KL Rahul 54(36) and Shikhar Dhawan 52(36). Sri Lanka were then restricted to 123 in 15.5 overs as India won the match by 78 runs. For Team India, Navdeep Saini picked up 3 wickets, Shardul and Washington picked up 2 while Bumrah managed 1 wicket.

In the historic Indore T20I in 2017, Rohit Sharma scored 118 off 43 balls as India set a target of 261 runs in front of the Sri Lankans. The hosts were then stopped at 172 in 17.2 overs, with Chahal picking up 4 wickets, Kuldeep getting 3 while Jaydev Unadkat and Hardik Pandya got 1 wicket each. India won the match by 88 runs.

Just like almost every time, Sri Lanka opted to field first and went on to lose the match. India, batting first, posted 180/3 on the board in 20 overs. KL Rahul remained the highest scorer with 61 runs in 48 balls, including 7 fours and a six. Sri Lankans were then restricted to a meagre total of 87 runs in 16 overs, as India won the match by 93 runs. Chahal picked up 4 wickets, Pandya got 3, Kuldeep 2 and Unadkat picked up a wicket for Team India.
