Batting first, Mumbai Indians got off to a great start as openers Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (26) added 50 runs for the first wicket. However, once captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed in the 7th over, the 5-time champions suffered a batting collapse as they went from 50/1 in 6.2 overs to 79/6 in 13.2 overs.

Although Surykumar, who came in to bat at 60/2 in 8.2 overs held one end. The batter started off rather cautiously as his score read 12 runs from 13 balls after the 14th over. With the collapse at the other end and the score reading 80/6, Surya decided that it was time that he increased the run rate before the team suffered an all-out. Targeting Shabaz Ahmed in the 15th over, the batter smacked him for a six and four in the over along with a single on the last ball to maintain his strike.

In the next over, the ball was in Siraj's hand who went rather expensive, 21 runs in 2 overs. SKY smacked the first delivery for four and played the rest of the over cautiously. In the next over, Yadav smacked Hasaranga for a six and maintained his streak of scoring a boundary in each over. In the 18th over by Harshal Patel, Surya smacked a four.

In the next over by Mohammad Siraj, Suryakumar Yadav opened his hands as he smacked 3 sixes in the over, completing his fifty, and then finished with the six on the last ball of the last over being bowled by Harshal Patel.

After Mumbai Indians looked struggling to get a total of above 120 at one time, Suryakumar's emphatic innings helped Mumbai Indians to a decent total against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and provide them with a chance to win their first match after losing their first three matches and remaining winless in this edition of the IPL.
