Ross Taylor came out to bat when New Zealand were at 45/2 in 14.3 overs, requiring another 445 runs to win the match or bat for 2 and a half more days to save the test match. However, the 37-year-old went for the big shots from ball one.

The first ball he faced, Ashwin almost dismissed him but he was saved by the extra bounce the pitch has been providing. The ball went above wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha and across the boundary for four byes. On his next ball, he went for a full-fledged sweep but missed the ball completely.

Taylor played his 3rd delivery towards backward point on a short delivery by Ashwin and took a single. The next two deliveries he faced consisted of a half chance and another drive towards backward point for no run. On his 6th delivery, he again went across the line to slog a full delivery by Axar Patel which was skidding into the batter. The ball dipped, and ended up beating both the bat's inside edge and the keeper and went for a four.

On his 7th delivery, he came down the pitch and drove it towards mid-off for a single. The next ball he faced was the last ball of his 'unbalanced inning'. Ashwin delivered a floaty off-break, and Ross Taylor went for a big slog-sweep. The ball took the clueless batter's top edge and went quite high in the air and swirling all the way through. Pujara kept his eyes on the ball and completed the catch with ease.

While ex-cricketers have heavily criticized this innings by Ross Taylor. Sunil Gavaskar in the commentary box remarked - 'absolutely zero application, very disappointing' while Aakash Chopra tweeted, 'Might go down as the worst 8 balls played by a top-order batter in Tests…'
