T20 Blast 2022 - In the South Group match between Essex and Somerset, played on 19th June (Sunday), 20-year-old Will Smeed displayed the true spirit of T20 cricket as he smacked 22 runs off the very first over. Smeed smacked a four & 3 sixes against leg-spinner Aron Nijjar in the first over to set the tone for Somerset to chase down a good target.

Chasing a total of 189, Will Smeed took on the leg-spinner in the first over. After playing the first delivery a dot, Smeed pulled the second delivery for a six over deep mid-wicket. Nijjar was spooked with such an attack early on, Nijjar bowled the next delivery a wide.

On the next delivery, Smeed displayed a replay of the six hit earlier and added 6 more runs to the total. Another dot delivery followed and Smeed smacked four on the 5th delivery towards cow corner for a boundary. Smeed smacked another huge six over deep mid-wicket completing 23 runs off the over. 

However, the explosive opener was dismissed in the next over by Daniel Sams on the first delivery he faced against this bowler. Smeed was dismissed after scoring 22 runs in 7 balls with a four & 3 sixes.

While talking about the match, after being put in to bat first, Essex posted 188/5 in 20 overs courtesy of Michael Pepper's unbeaten 86 runs in 49 deliveries with 10 fours & 3 sixes. Paul Walter also contributed with 58 runs in 29 balls with 4 fours & 5 sixes. In reply, Rilee Rossouw smacked an unbeaten 85 runs in 36 balls with 5 fours & 7 sixes while Somerset captain Tom Abell smacked unbeaten 62 runs in 46 balls with 3 fours & 3 sixes as Somerset chased down the total in 17.3 overs, winning the match by 8 wickets. This match was played at County Ground, Chelmsford.
