India fought back with late wickets in the evening session after Joe Root's double century helped England score 555/8 at the end of the day 2 at Chennai.
Resuming the day at 263/3, Joe Root and Ben Stokes added 124 runs for the fourth wicket. Stokes scored 82 runs before getting caught at boundary off Shahbaz Nadeem's delivery.
Root and Olie Pope continued to comfortably add 82 runs for the fifth wicket. Pope was struck in front by Ashwin on 34.
Root reached his double century smashing a six over long-on, becoming the first batsman to score 200 in his 100th test match. Nadeem finally removed the England captain at the score of 218.
Ishant Sharma removed Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer in consecutive deliveries. Dom Bess and Jack Leach survived till the end of the day, adding 30 runs.
All the bowlers, barring Washington Sundar, got two wickets each.
