The Indian team lost its opener pair - Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in reply to England's 578 in the first innings.
Resuming the day at 555/8, England could only add 23 runs in the first 45 minutes of the day 3 before losing their tail. Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin took three wickets each, while Ishant Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem got 2-2.
Joe Root was the top-scorer for England - 218 runs.
In reply, India started well with a couple of boundaries from the bat of both the openers. Jofra Archer removed Rohit with a peach of a delivery, who ended up edging the ball to the keeper.
Gill was looking good for his 29, which included five fours. Archer got him driving the ball straight to mid-on, where James Anderson took a good diving catch.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli are currently the pair at the crease.
