India and Sri Lanka will face off in the final of the Asia Cup on September 17 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
In today's Asia Cup special, let's go back to the final of the fourth edition of the tournament that took place between host India and Sri Lanka. The final was held at the famous Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and elected to field in a match reduced to 45 overs per side. Sri Lanka was 175/4 and looking for a big score. In the 38th over of the innings, Kapil Dev had Roshan Mahanama caught behind off the last ball of the over. The great Indian all-rounder Dev then had Sanath Jayasuriya caught by Sanjay Manjrekar with the first delivery of his next over. He trapped Rumesh Ratnayake in front of the stumps to complete his hat-trick. Kapil's hat-trick had reduced Sri Lanka to 181 for 8. He picked up one more wicket to finish with figures of 9-0-31-4.
Sanjay Manjrekar (75 not out) and Azhar's 39-ball unbeaten 54 helped India chase down the target with 17 balls to spare. India was crowned the Asia Cup Champion.
Kapil became only the fifth bowler and second Indian (after Chetan Sharma) to take an ODI hat-trick. Till date, no other Indian has taken a hat-trick in the Asia Cup.
