Australia's T20 captain Aaron Finch on February 7th (Tuesday) announced his retirement from international cricket. The cricketer stated that he was honoured to play with 'some of the best' in the game.
Known for his thunderous starts while opening the innings, Finch's spot in the team was under a cloud of doubt after Australia failed to make it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 while defending their title.
It is noteworthy that the 36-year-old Finch led Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup in 2021 in Dubai. Finch earlier retired as the ODI skipper of Australia in September 2022. Finch currently holds the record for the highest score in a T20I as he smashed 172 runs off just 76 balls against Zimbabwe in 2018.
The destructive opener also has the third-highest individual score in T20Is as well with his knock of 156 runs against England in 2013.
“To be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play with and against some of the greatest players of all time has been an incredible honour", said Aaron Finch.
Finch has represented Australia in 146 ODIs, scoring 5,406 runs with 17 tons along with 103 T20Is with 3120 runs to his name with 2 tons.
