India ended day 3 on 257/6, trailing England's total of 578 at Chennai.
Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara rescued the Indian team after they got 73/4, losing both openers, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane.
Pant and Pujara added 119 runs for the fifth wicket. Pujara got out in an unlucky manner on 73 after his shot struck short leg fielder and went straight to mid-wicket. Pant continued to play his shots and scored 91 before miscueing another attempted lofted hit.
Dom Bess took four wickets and Jofra Archer picked up both the openers in his opening spell.
Earlier, England resumed the day on 555/8 with overnight batsmen Dom Bess and Jack Leach. The visitors could only add 23 runs as they bundled out for 578. Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin took three wickets each.
India will come to crease on day 4 with 321 runs still to the trail. Washington Sundar and R Ashwin will take guard.
