India will enter the Chepauk Stadium on Day 5 needing 381 runs to win the first test, while England would be hoping to pick nine wickets. 

England got bowled for 178 in the third innings in the first hour of the evening session giving India a target of 420 to win. Indian openers, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma started well scoring 25 under six overs. Sharma got bowled off a Jack Leach's beauty of a ball. 

Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara played out the rest of the session as India ended day 4 on 39/1. 

Earlier in the day, Washington Sundar's unbeaten 85 got India to 337 before getting all out. England did not enforce the follow-on and added 178 runs to their lead of 241. Joe Root once again top-scored with a quickfire 40 off 32 balls. R Ashwin finished the match with bowling figures of 9/207.
