IPL 2023: After delivering an outstanding performance in the SA20 tournament, making his team win the title of the inaugural T20 league, star South African batsman Aiden Markram has now been given the charge to lead the Sunrisers Hyderabad team for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.
Markram replaces former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who was released by the franchise after last season.
Proteas player Markram was also a part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise in the recently concluded South Africa T20 League and led Eastern Cape to victory in their first season under his captaincy. There were speculations that Mayank Agarwal, who was bought by SRH for Rs 8.5 crore, could also captain Hyderabad this season but the Hyderabad management has reposed faith in Markram.
The SRH franchise owned by Kavya Maran announced the appointment of Markram as the captain on their social media account on Thursday (February 23) morning. Sharing a video from their official Twitter account, Hyderabad wrote, 'The wait is over, Orange Army meet their new captain Aiden Markram.'
Markram had an augmented IPL season last year where he scored 381 runs at an average of 47.63 and a strike rate of more than 139 with three fifties.
Markram, on the other hand, was the third-highest run-scorer in the SA20 league, scoring 366 runs in 12 matches at an average of 33.27. In this competition, 1 century and 1 half-century also came out of his bat. Sunrisers Eastern Cape led by this African striker defeated Pretoria Capitals in the final of the tournament.
