Indian Premier League(IPL) has begun its 14th season since its inception back in 2008. These years have seen a lot of changes and how different franchises approach the popular T20 league.
Every year at least one team either changes its jersey or logo or sometimes both. However, only three teams have changed their franchise name. Let's take a look:
1) From Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals - The GMR group owned Delhi-based franchise was initially known as Delhi Daredevils. Till season 2018, they were called the Daredevils or DD in short form. In 2019, the owners decided to change the entire look of the franchise including the name, and changed it to Delhi Capitals. One might say it a coincidence but since the new name, the fortunes of the team have changed as they have finished in the last two seasons and even went on to play the final in IPL 2020.
2) From Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings - The Punjab-based franchise, co-owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, has recently changed its name to Punjab Kings. They were, till IPL 2020, were known as Kings XI Punjab or KXIP. With the name change, the franchise would be hoping to change their fortunes and finally win their first IPL trophy.
3) Mumbai Indians - One of the surprising names in this list is of the IPL's most successful franchise - Mumbai Indians. They are known as MI since IPL 2008 however, they were initially supposed to be called Mumbai Razors. Now if one notices, their logo has a razor(Sudarshan Chakra) as well. After the initial thoughts, Sachin Tendulkar, who has been part of the team as a player as well as in the coaching staff for MI, suggested that the team should be called Mumbai Indians.
