Pakistan, opting to bat first, started well scoring 16 runs in the first 10 balls of the game. However, Tim Southee made the first breakthrough in the form of Haider Ali and got Abdullah Shafique two balls later.
Mohammad Hafeez, coming in to bat at number 4, kept losing the partners at the other end regularly. He had no choice but to attack to make sure Pakistan reach a competitive total. Hafeez remained not out but missed his century by one run. His knock of 99 included 10 four and five sixes.
For New Zealand, Southee took four wickets in his four overs while giving away just 21 runs.
