South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl in the second one-day international against Australia at the Mangaung Oval on Saturday.
South African captain Temba Bavuma said his team needed to improve with both bat and ball in the first 20 overs after losing the first match by three wickets at the same venue on Thursday.
A different pitch was prepared but Bavuma said he expected it to be similar to that used on Thursday.
"It's a bit drier so there could be variable bounce with the new ball and a bit of spin. We saw under lights it was a bit better for batting."
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh agreed with Bavuma's assessment.
Australia would continue to "play with intent" but he said that "execution was the key" after scoring rapidly but losing seven wickets inside the first 17 overs on Thursday.
