SAW vs SLW: Despite Chamari Athapaththu playing an impressive inning, South African women managed to pull back things as they restricted Sri Lanka to 129/4 in the 1st match of the Women's T20 World Cup.
Sri Lankan openers Athapaththu and Harshitha Madavi managed to go through the powerplay without losing their wicket. Madavi was dismissed for 8 runs off 20 balls in the 7th over as Sri Lanka lost their first wicket for 28 runs.
After the slow start, Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne got together and etched a partnership of 86 runs in 62 balls. Gunaratne scored 35 runs off 34 balls before getting run out on the first delivery of the 18th over. Athapaththu departed on the very next delivery after scoring 68 runs in 50 balls with 12 fours, with the scoreboard reading 114/3.
From there on, the batters couldn't do much and eventually managed a modest target of 130 runs on a batting-friendly surface. For Sri Lanka, Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp and Nadine de Klerk managed 1 wicket each.
Earlier, South Africa captain Sune Luus won the toss and opted to field first against Sri Lanka in the 1st Group A match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2022. This match is being played at Newlands, Cape Town.
