Ranji Trophy 2022-23

The 2022-23 season of the Ranji Trophy is the 88th season in the history of India's premier first-class tournament. The tournament is set to be played on December 13th, 2022 and will conclude on February 20th, 2023. Madhya Pradesh will play as defending champions as they managed to clinch their maiden Ranji Trophy in the last season.

This season, BCCI has introduced the Promotion and relegation format. That means, the Ranji Trophy will have two winners this time, unlike earlier when all the teams used to compete for one trophy. This change has been made to improve the standard and competitiveness of the tournament.

The teams will be divided into two categories – Elite and Plate Group. The Elite group will consist of 32 teams divided into four groups, while the Plate category will have 6 teams. Elite group teams will play one match against each other in the group and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

In the Plate group, the teams will play one match against each other as well but the top four teams will qualify for the Plate group knockouts while the bottom two teams will play for the 5th and 6th positions. A playoff to determine the 3rd and 4th positions will also be played. The 2 Plate group finalists will be promoted to the Elite Group next season while the bottom two teams from the Elite group will be demoted to the Plate group.
