Clive Lloyd - Interesting Facts, Trivia, And Records About 'Supercat'

Clive Lloyd, who celebrates his birthday on 31st August, is one of the most hard-hitting batters and successful captains in cricket history. The left-handed dasher was the first West Indian to earn 100 international caps and played a pivotal role in the rise of West Indian cricket in the 70s. 

Here are some interesting facts, trivia, and records about Clive Lloyd: 

1) Clive Lloyd's eyes got damaged at the age of 12 when he got into a fight in school. 

2) Lloyd's father was a chauffeur and had no real fascination for cricket but her mother followed the sport. She got into cricket since her sister was the mother of West Indian legendary spinner Lance Gibbs. 

3) Clive Lloyd was the captain of his school cricket team at the age of 14. He eventually made his first-class debut in 1963-64 season for the then British Guiana. 

4) He made his debut against India at Bombay and helped West Indies in winning the test match with the scores of 82 and 78 not out. 

5) Although a batter, Lloyd was a part-time bowler as well. In his first test in Australia, he was asked by Garry Sobers to bowl a few off-breaks to centurions Ian Chappell and Bill Lawry. He got them both out soon. 

6) In 1978, while playing against Gloucestershire, Lloyd top-edged a six off Mike Procter, who was breathing fire in that spell. After the six, an irritated Procter said something to the Guyanese batter, which he didn't like. Lloyd told the Gloucestershire captain that he will hit Procter over the Pavillion. On the very next ball, Clive Lloyd smashed Mike Procter over the Old Trafford pavilion. 

7) Post his retirement from cricket, Lloyd worked as a civil servant for the Guyana ministry of health. 

8) Clive Lloyd has since then coached and managed international teams. He even had a good stint as a match referee. 

9) The left-hander batter scored 7515 test runs in 110 matches. He amassed 1977 runs in 87 ODIs. In 490 first-class matches, Clive Lloyd hit 31232 runs which included 79 centuries and 172 half-centuries. In 10915 List-A runs came in 378 matches.
