England defeated India in the first of the four test match series at Chennai. Joe Root was awarded Man of the Match for his knock of 218 in the first innings followed by a quickfire 40 in the second. India got bowled for 192 on the final day while chasing 420 to hand a 227 run win to England. The second test match will also be played at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium.

1) Root became the first player ever to score a century in his 98th, 99th, and 100th Test. He is also the 9th player overall to score a century in the 100th Test. Joe Root went on to become the first player to score a double century in his 100th Test.

2)Joe Root became the second captain to make three consecutive 150+ scores in three consecutive. Only Sir Don Bradman had achieved this feat in 1937.

3)Root’s last three scores in international cricket are 228, 186, and 218. He is only the second player to register scores over 180 in three consecutive Tests. Kumar Sangakkara was the first to do so in 2007.

4)Ravichandran Ashwin bowled the first no-ball of his Test career after delivering 20614 balls. He crossed the line while bowling to Joe Root in the first innings.
