Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 Mega Auction is a classic case of reacting to the result. The last two seasons haven't been memorable for SRH and in the upcoming season, the management decided to make changes, but have they improved, or have they masked the mistakes with new personnel?

SRH began the Auction process by retaining three players - Kane Williamson(14cr), Umran Malik(4cr), and Abdul Samad(4cr) - as they entered the two-day event with 68 crores in the purse.

At the end of the Auction, SRH was left with just 10 lakhs in the purse, spending 89.9 crores on 23 players. SRH bought a total of 12 uncapped players - two retained - for 29.25 crores, and 11 capped players - one retained - for 60.65 crores. Hyderabad brought back eight players - three retained - from the IPL 2021 squad for 37.1 crores.

SRH's most expensive player was Nicholas Pooran for 10.75 crores while the next expensive buy was Washington Sundar for 8.75 crores.

SRH's Change In Personnel

The management has hinted that Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma will be opening the innings, meaning two anchor batters together, although one is a pace hitter and the other is a spin hitter.

SRH has managed to get variety in the batting but most of them are pace hitters. That shouldn't be much of a problem though due to the addition of Nicholas Pooran in the middle order.

Pooran, Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad make up a very strong middle order along with the addition of Romario Shepherd as the pace bowling allrounder. Hyderabad has a batting depth but at the cost of bowlers, who SRH banked on in the previous seasons.

Hyderabad once again got Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the squad but his diminishing form plus injury-prone body is a concern for the long term. The other interesting thing is the lack of multi-phase bowlers.

SRH identified Umran Malik's potential and retained him. But he is still unexplored and inexperienced, just like the rest of the bowling. Almost all bowlers haven't played consistently - T Natarajan(coming with injury, missed IPL 2021), Marco Jansen, Kartik Tyagi).

Earlier, SRH used to have the services of Rashid Khan but now it doesn't. There is a massive collapse in the spin bowling quality. Washington Sundar is so far an off-spinner with a brilliant economical game. He will need to up his game to become an ace wicket-taking option.

SRH has tried to make a squad looking at the future but it will be tough for them to assess the team at the end of the IPL 2022 if Hyderabad doesn't have a good season. Many players are still in the development stage and raw, and Hyderabad is a franchise desperate to have a good season. The Kane Williamson-led is going to have an interesting season that could go to extremes.
