The seventh edition of the ICC T20 World Cup will begin on 17th October in UAE & Oman with final scheduled for 14th November 2021. A total of 16 teams will  battle out for the title in this mega event.

T20 World Cup 2021 Format

16 Teams will participate in the tournament tothat will have two rounds - Group Stage and Super 12s. 

The seventh edition was originally scheduled to play in Australia in 2020, but the Covid Pandemic disrupted the plans. After several discussions and deciding on various alternative venues, it was decided that India will host the seventh edition (earlier it planned to host the eighth in 2021), and Australia will host in 2022. 

However, the second wave of the pandemic hit India in 2021 which once again created doubt as to when & where will the T20 World Cup will be held. ICC and BCCI, in June, confirmed that the tournament will be held in UAE & Oman. The hosts of the World Cup will remain BCCI only. 

T20 World Cup Qualified Teams

A total of 16 teams have qualified to play in the T20 World Cup 2021. As per the T20I rankings till 31st December 2018, eight teams - including hosts India - directly qualified in the Super12 round. 

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh made it into the group stage without playing the Qualifiers. Six teams - Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman - qualified after playing the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier. 

A total of 42 matches will be played in the T20 World Cup, including 12 matches of group stages and 30 matches of Super 12s. Out of eight teams in group stages, only four teams will go into the next round. 

T20 World Cup Venues

ICC has finalized four venues where the tournament will be held - Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Al Amarat (Oman).

The eight teams in round one will be divided into two groups - A & B. Top two teams from each group will qualify for the next stage. 

• Group A - Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, and Sri Lanka
• Group B - Bangladesh, Oman, Papua New Guinea, and Scotland

T20 World Cup 2021: Round 2

The Super 12 stage will see four teams getting into two groups according to their standings in the first round. The team from Group A having the first position, and the second position team from Group B will join Group 1. The team having the second position in Group A and the first position team of Group B will join Group 2.

• Group 2: Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, A2, B1

The top two teams from each group will qualify to the knockout phase - Semi-final & Final.
